BASIC GRAMMAR
French comparative is very easy to deal with. There are
three comparatives :
Comparative of superiority
Comparative of inferiority and
Comparative of equality
01-Comparative of superiority :
For the Comparative of superiority
the rule is the following :
"subject + verb + plus +
adjective + que + object"
Example
je suis plus fort
que toi
: I am stronger than you.
la vie est plus
importante que la mort
: life is more important than death.
le chien est plus gros
que le chat
: the dog is bigger than the cat.
02-Comparative of inferiority :
For the Comparative of inferiority
the rule is the following :
"subject + verb + moins +
adjective + que + object"
Example
je suis moins fort
que toi
: I am less strong than you.
la vie est moins
importante que la mort
: life is less important than death.
le chien est moins
gros
que le chat
: the dog is less big than the cat.
03-Comparative of equality :
For the Comparative of equality
the rule is the following :
"subject + verb + aussi +
adjective + que + object"
Example
je suis aussi fort
que toi
: I am as strong as you.
la vie est aussi
importante que la mort
: life is as important as death.
le chien est aussi
gros
que le chat
: the dog is as big as the cat.
As regarding superlative, there are
two superlatives :
Superlative of superiority
Superlative of inferiority
01-Superlative of superiority :
For the Superlative of superiority
the rule is the following :
"subject + verb + le plus +
adjective"
Example
je suis le plus fort
: I am the strongest.
la vie est la chose la
plus
importante
: life is the most important thing.
le chien est l'animal le
plus gros
: the dog is the biggest animal.
02-Superlative of inferiority :
For the Superlative of inferiority
the rule is the following :
"subject + verb + le moins +
adjective"
Example
je suis le moins fort
: I am the least strong.
la vie est la chose la
moins
importante
: life is the least important thing.
le chien est l'animal le
moins gros
: the dog is the least big animal.
Some adjectives have irregular comparative and superlative. Let's consider the following table :
