02/ Conjugation of auxiliaries in simple past.

In English, there is only one simple past tense. But, in French there are two : "imparfait" and "passé simple". Among these two past tenses, the one that is used in English is "imparfait". However, for the sake of knowledge, we are going to conjugate both of them.

02-b "Imparfait" (Simple past).

Auxiliary "être" (to be) :

Affirmative form :
J'étais : I was.
tu étais : you were.
il était : he was.
elle était : she was.
nous étions : we were.
vous étiez : you were.
ils étaient : they were.
elles étaient : they were.

Negative form :
Je n'étais pas : I was not.
tu n'étais pas : you were not.
il n'était pas : he was not.
elle n'était pas : she was not.
nous n'étions pas : we were not.
vous n'étiez pas : you were not.
ils n'étaient pas : they were not.
elles n'étaient pas : they were not.

Interrogative form :
étais-je ? : was I ?
étais-tu ? : were you ?
était-il ? : was he ?
était-elle ? : was she ?
