06/ Relative pronouns.

Here are French relative pronouns :

Relative pronouns Meaning
qui who
que / qui that / whom
dont whose
auquel / à laquelle, auxquels, auxquelles, duquel... about

In french and in English, relative pronouns are almost used the same way. Except the fact that, French uses qui for subjects and objects.


Example

La fille qui parle là est ma soeur : the girls who speaks there is my sister.
La fille que vois là est ma soeur : the girls whom see there is my sister.
le chien qui dort est méchant : the dog that sleeps is mad.
le chien que j'ai acheté n'est pas méchant : the dog that I have bought isn't mad.
l'homme dont le chat a été volé appelle la police : the man whose cat was stolen calls the police.
la personne à laquelle je pense ne me considère même pas : the person I am thinking about doesn't even consider me.
le chien auquel je tenais est mort : the dog I cared about has died.
